CART, or Communication Access Realtime Translation, is the translation of spoken words into English text. At Bethany, we project these real-time captions onto a large screen set up on the stage so that they are visible to anyone in the room who may find it useful for following the service. (We also use Powerpoint and other visual aids to make the service visually interesting.) Whatever is being spoken in English appears on the bottom of the large screens in front of the sanctuary. If a Deaf person is signing to the congregation, the words spoken by their voice interpreter appear on the screen. CART is primarily used by people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or for whom English is a second language.
