Our Story

The past, present, and future
of Bethany Community Church

1986

Bethany Community Church was started by a church planting team led by Pastor Kevin and Ann McGhee being sent out from Bethany Church of Long Beach, California, with the goal of impacting the National Capitol Region for Christ. On December 14, 1986, Bethany Community Church held its first worship service at Laurel High School.

1991

After four years, the church leased space in an office park at Laurel Lakes on Route 1, where it held worship services for the next 10 years.

1996

As membership at Bethany grew, the time came to seek out property on which Bethany could build our own facilities to more effectively serve the Baltimore Washington Corridor. In 1996, the family of Dr. James W. Smith of Laurel donated 24 acres of its beautiful wooded farm on Riding Stable Road to Bethany Community Church.

2003

After many years of construction, we were able to move into our new Sanctuary in 2003, under the leadership of our founding Pastor Kevin McGhee.

2018

In 2018, Pastor Kevin transitioned from his role as Pastor of Bethany Community Church and the search began for our next Pastor. Pastor Randall Anderson was selected to serve as an intentional interim Pastor while the search was conducted for Bethany's next Pastor.

2019

After a year of searching, Rev. Nathaniel J. Yates Sr. was nominated and, by way of congregational vote, affirmed as Bethany's new Senior Pastor on May 5, 2019; with 97.4% of the congregation voting in the affirmative. Pastor Yates first sermon as the Pastor was on June 2, 2019 and later a formal installation service was held on September 7, 2019.

Today

Today, under the leadership of Pastor Nate, we are building on the mission of the church to help people begin and grow in a relationship with Jesus Christ, while utilizing new creative methods to take the gospel to places that we physically may not be able to go, through the use of technology and media. We are intentionally empowering the next generation of leaders, engaging our children and youth, and fostering an authentic environment where people can form deeper connections with God and with their community.

Tomorrow

We are moving forward, continuing to make disciples. Our aim is to spread the gospel throughout the Laurel community and beyond as we send missionaries to the least reached communities in the world.

We believe that God has strategically placed us in the Laurel community for such a time as this! As such, moving we press forward with the Love of Jesus; striving to impact all generations, ethnicities, and groups to show the world that we are one in Christ and that our hope is built on Jesus.

We open our arms to the unchurched, the questioning skeptic, the wayward soul, those in need, those seeking truth, and those simply looking for something they have never known.

Our doors are open to all. And we welcome you with the Love of Christ. It does not matter why you came, only that you came; and we pray that your life with never be the same!

Be Part Of Our Story
Hello Bethany Family,

We pray that you are all well this evening. As you know, there is a weather advisory for our area until 10am in effect regarding the incoming snow, potential slippery roads as a result of the weather conditions, and low temperatures. Our understanding is that the snow will conclude by 7am, however, due to the short amount of time that will be available to assess and make a judgement call in the morning that would keep team members, volunteers, and members of the congregation out of harm’s way, after the discussion with the Elders we have decided not to have service in the morning. This decision did not come lightly, but out of an abundance of caution and care for our members, some of whom arrive at the church very early to support service. We believe that this is the best course of action due to the circumstances and the short window to decide and inform everyone. We pray that each of you is warm and safe, and hope that even as we thank God for 39 years as a church from our homes that you will take time for family devotion together.

While we didn’t plan for our anniversary to come this way, we remain grateful for God’s keeping hand on Bethany Community Church for all of these years. We hope to see you all in person next week!

God bless,

Pastor Nate
